What is Bakelite?
Bakelite scientifically known as Polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride is the first synthetic plastic invented. Bakelite was introduced to the world in 1907 by Leo Baekeland. Bakelite is a thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin, formed by combining two implausible substances, Carbolic acid and Formaldehyde together. These substances mixed together would make hard plastic which can't be damaged or broken easily. Bakelite is non- flammable, resistant to heat, would not conduct electricity, Bakelite is lightweight and enduring. Bakelite could be broken down and fabricated into boundless shapes. Bakelite was a really good insulator which made it notably useful in the automotive and electrical industries emerging in the early in the 1900s. Bakelite can be easily coloured it was also used decoratively for jewellery, radio cabinets and all kinds of ornaments. Bakelite jewellery became exceptionally popular in the 1920s as an affordable and attractive replacement for other materials. It came in several colours, including translucent and marbled shades by the 1950s. Bakelite replaced an earlier, more flammable form of plastic called celluloid.
